Gssoc’19 aka GirlScript Summer Of Code ended with its last day as 31st May 2019 but what it left with me is the amazing experience I had with some of the projects under gssoc. This post describes my experience with one of the splendid projects — TECHTONICA. Though my contributions with Techtonica are not that much still I decided to share about it because of two reasons:

  1. Techtonica is actually an incredible project.
  2. Mentors of this project are one of the best I ever got.

What is Techtonica?

Techtonica is a non-profit project of SocialGood that does free tech training and job placement for unemployed or underemployed folks. The main motto of Techtonica is to bridge the tech-gap. They offer six months of free, full-time tech training with living stipends and laptops to Bay Area women and non-binary adults with low incomes, then place graduates into jobs with sponsor companies.

How my journey with Techtonica started?

It was the beginning of gssoc. I was looking for the perfect project to contribute to. I wanted to contribute to not only to a project with the tech-stack matching my tech-stack but to a project to which I could actually connect. While I was going through the description & tech-stacks of all the projects under gssoc, I first shortlisted the projects which matched my tech-stack. I wanted to contribute to a Web-Development Project. Techtonica was one of my shortlisted projects. Though all the projects were awesome, but I decided to go with Techtonica as it has an aim to which I could personally relate a lot — Bridging the tech-gap. I am myself working on the very same thing with my community — Girl Code It.

I joined their slack channel. The mentors & participants here were already active & working on issues at a very good rate. I was instructed by the mentor Alina Ldoahl to go through the issues & comment on the one I want to work. Very soon, I selected my first issue of Gssoc’19. To my disappointment, I solved it partially but to my goodness, Alina Mam turned out to be a great mentor, She helped me with my silly doubt. And not only she but also a participant Rita voluntarily chose to help me out.

I was overwhelmed when my first pull request was merged by Alina Mam. I subsequently raised 3 more pull requests & all of them were accepted.

I was really happy as Techtonica became my first stepping stone into the world of open-source.

Thanking Note!

Now that gssoc’19 is over, I want to take this opportunity to thank all the mentors, admins & fellow contributors of the Techtonica Project for creating such an awesome environment to learn & grow with them, to help me even with the silliest doubts.

Special mention to Alina Lodahl Mam, Kundan Kumar Sir, Praveen Kumar Purushothaman Sir, shwetha Mam, Manaswini Das Mam .

Alina Mam is a too great mentor, I can’t stop talking good about her.

Praveen Sir holds very unique respect. I feel lucky to have him in my network.

I interacted with Maniswini Mam in the beginning and she was the one who guided me on how to filter projects. She has a very positive aura of her own.

Thank you all!

Techtonica is special to me as my open-source journey started with it.

I would always want to keep in touch with you all & would like to work again with you.
